What Does This Fetal Skull Model Demonstrate?
The separate skull bones of this model are clearly displayed, and meticulous moulding distinguishes the following details:
- Sutures - which form alone the bony plates and help fuse the fetal skull as the individual ages
- Fontanelles - which become bone over time
- External auditory meatus - which is the bony canal of the ear canal pathway
Educational Key Card Included
The Erler-Zimmer Fetal Skull is supplied with a removable key card, making the anatomy of a fetal skull to be easily studied. Alternatively, this removable key card, in conjunction with the model, is also useful as a patient education tool in hospitals or GP's, in regards to any birth defects such as anencephaly, or in regards to concerns pregnant women may have about giving birth.
What is Anencephaly?
Anencephaly is a type of birth defect that happens when the brain, skull and scalp do not develop properly in the uterus. Portions of the fetal brain and skull are missing, and babies born with this condition die within hours or days.
Life-Like Bone Material
The painted fetal skull is made from a life-like material. This allows the model to look and feel like real bone for an enhanced study of the anatomy of a fetal skull.
