What Should I Use This Top For?
DermaSilk Children's Long-Sleeve Top helps to keep your child fresh and cool, making sure their skin is protected and that they don't overheat. It is also effective at reducing the itch-scratch cycle, a condition commonly associated with eczema and dermatitis where itching leads to scratching and scratching leads to itching, causing further skin irritation and sometimes worsening skin conditions. The DermaSilk Silk Top can help break this cycle as the smooth silk fabric reduces friction on the skin.
Can I Use This Top Instead of Conventional Treatment for My Child's Condition?
DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing is designed to complement conventional treatment rather than replace it. When used in combination with medical creams and ointments, we recommend making sure medication is fully absorbed into the skin before DermaSilk clothing is worn.
Why Is Silk Better For My Child's Skin Than Cotton?
Whilst both fabrics are natural, silk has the advantage of being a protein fibre rather than a vegetable fibre, creating a smooth and friction-free material that will not irritate skin. DermaSilk is also capable of maintaining a stable body temperature in any climate, and is able to absorb up to a third of its weight in moisture without feeling damp. These are important features for those with irritated and sensitive skin, to reduce likelihood of further irritation.
Can I Just Use Ordinary Silk Instead of DermaSilk?
Conventional silk is often made from tightly-woven threads which do not allow for the free passage of air through their weave. DermaSilk uses a specially-designed knitted construction that allows for breathability.
Why Is DermaSilk Sericin-Free?
Medical grade silk, as used in stitches in surgical operations, is made from pure fibroin, the central core of the silk thread. This is because the sericin component of silk has been shown to be linked to some allergic reactions. DermaSilk has eliminated this risk by removing the sericin from their garments to give you pure, medical-grade, hypoallergenic silk.
How Does the Antimicrobial Shield Work?
Silk is a protein fibre and so can promote the growth of bacteria and fungi, which is a problem for eczematous skin as it can cause irritation. The antimicrobial shield is colourless and odourless, and it kills bacteria and fungi by puncturing and electrocuting it.
Because it is a physical killer of microbes rather than a chemical one like silver or triclosan, no chemicals are released from the silk to poison the microbes, which is great news for skin. This shield is permanently bonded to the silk by a patented process and has been shown to not leave the silk, even after 50 washes.
Will the Antimicrobial Shield Irritate My Skin?
No. The Antimicrobial shield has been tested extensively to ensure its safety, and has been used in hospital settings for nearly 30 years. It has been subject to extensive toxicity tests to ensure safety on both intact and damaged skin. No reports of adverse reactions have ever been reported.
Has DermaSilk Been Tested Medically?
DermaSilk has undergone a series of clinical trials for a number of different medical conditions and has been shown to offer a positive benefit to patients. Here is a study for your reference:
How Should I Wash My DermaSilk Top?
Your DermaSilk garments can be washed at 30°C provided they are placed in a net bag to protect the seams. In many parts of the UK, there are minerals in the water that can remain on the silk fibres after washing. In areas like this, your DermaSilk garment can be restored as follows: After every ten washes, soak your DermaSilk clothing in a solution of two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda per litre of water overnight, then wash as instructed. This method can also be used for stain removal.
