What is Hallux Valgus and Why Does it Occur?
Hallux Valgus, or bunions, is a gradual deformity of the feet which happens when something puts extra pressure on your big toe. It is a bony bump that forms at the base of your big toe. Bunions develop on the inside edge of your big toe joint — the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint.
How Does a Bunion Night Splint Work?
Bunion splints can help to reposition the toe back into the anatomically desired position, reducing unwanted friction and allowing the bunion to heal. The Hallux Valgus Bunion Night Splint immobilises your big toe in a corrected position and is perfectly comfortable so that you can sleep comfortably.
How Effective Are Bunion Night Splints?
According to a study done by the School of Rehabilitation Sciences at Iran University, the use of a static orthotic night splint for one month changed the angle of the hallux valgus (the bone that causes bunions when misaligned) by several degrees. It also resulted in an increase in the range of motion of the metatarsophalangeal joint, which improved walking gait and helped to reduce the size and pain of bunions. For even more pronounced results it was recommended that patients wear the splint for a longer period of time.
