LimbO Finger Waterproof Cast and Dressing Protector Mitt
The LimbO Finger Waterproof Cast and Dressing Protector Mitt is an innovative durable waterproof protector, designed to keep your finger cast or hand dressing dry while bathing and showering. It is a self-sealing, self-supporting garment that prevents the penetration of water without being restrictive.
Who Can Use the LimbO Dressing Protector Mitt?
The LimbO Dressing Protector Mitt is designed for adults with a finger cast or hand dressing. The waterproof cast protector can be worn during bathing, showering, or washing the dishes, ensuring your cast or dressing remains dry following an injury, hand burn, or similar.
Please note that the LimbO Finer Plaster Cast Protector is not suitable for thumb injuries or hand casts. This is because the casts with hand and thumb injuries tend to keep the thumb at an outward angle, meaning that you can't fit it in the Protector Mitt.
Why Should I Keep My Cast Dry?
When wearing a finger cast, it's important to keep it dry, as getting it wet will cause the cast to weaken. This will then mean that your fingers are no longer properly supported, preventing them from healing properly.
If you are wearing a silver dressing, water may react with the dressing and cause the silver to turn into silver chloride. This would make the dressing less effective at battling infections, so it's important to ensure that steps are taken to keep your cast or dressing dry at all times.
How Do I Wear the LimbO Cast Protector?
The LimbO Cast Protector Mitt is easy to wear. Follow the instructions below to apply your LimbO Mitt with ease:
- Using your thumb and forefinger, carefully grip the black neoprene seal on the outer edge where it joins the clear plastic.
- Insert your hand with the dressing or cast into the mitt.
- Allow the seal to turn inwards as it slides over your hand and up your forearm.
- Once the mitt is as far on as it will go, pull the whole LimbO down slightly so that the seal turns upwards with the inner surface of the seal in contact with your skin above the cast or bandage.
Once your LimbO is in place, you may wish to remove some of the air trapped inside by carefully lifting the seal and squeezing some air out, before letting the seal go back against the skin. This helps to prevent excessive ballooning or floating when in the water. The video below provides a visual guide to wearing your LimbO protector*.
*Please note that this video shows the LimbO Half-Arm Cast Protector. However, the seal works in the same way, and the same steps for application can be followed.
How Do I Remove the LimbO Cast Protector?
To remove the LimbO Cast Protector, carefully roll the seal back on itself and slide the LimbO off. Avoid pinching or tearing the neoprene seal with your fingernails, as this can hinder the ability of the seal to reliably prevent penetration of water.
Can I Bathe Or Shower While Wearing My Cast and Dressing Protector?
Absolutely! The LimbO Dressing Protector provides a seal at the forearm, preventing any water from entering the protector or coming into contact with your cast or dressing while you are in the bath or shower.
Can I Fully Submerge the Cast Protector?
Yes, the LimbO Cast and Dressing Protector can be fully submerged in water. It is completely waterproof, ensuring you can shower, bathe, or wash up without worrying about water penetrating the protector and coming into direct contact with your cast.
Can I Wear the LimbO Protector Mitt with an Undressed Wound?
As the LimbO Protector Mitt is a non-sterile product, it should not be worn with an open or undressed wound. Proper care and dressing of wounds is advised before wearing any LimbO Cast Protector.
Can I Swim with the LimbO Protector?
Swimming or partaking in other water sports is not advised during the healing process. The LimbO is designed for gentle submersion, and can be worn during hydrotherapy or when paddling. However, it is not advised for swimming.
Which Size of LimbO Protector Mitt Do I Need?
To make purchasing easier, the LimbO Protector Mitt is provided in one universal size that is designed to fit most individuals. If features a seal circumference of 22cm to 25cm, and seals onto the forearm 30cm above the longest fingertip.
For How Long Can I Wear the LimbO Cast Protector?
It is advised that the LimbO Cast Protector is worn for no more than 20 to 30 minutes at a time. This is because trapped air can become quite warm and cause condensation, which risks your cast or dressing becoming wet.
Is the LimbO Protector Mitt Reusable?
Yes, the LimbO Protector Mitt is reusable. It's designed to last around 12 weeks, allowing you to wear it whenever you bathe or shower while your fingers are still in a cast or dressing.
While the mitt is reusable, you may prefer to keep a spare to hand. This ensures you can wash one LimbO Protector Mitt, for example after washing the dishes, while still being able to protect your cast when you bathe or shower later in the day.
How Do I Wash the LimbO Cast Mitt?
The LimbO Cast Mitt can be hand washed as required with a mild disinfectant or detergent. Once washed, you can hang it upside down to dry before storage or reuse.
