Strong Natural Light for Battling SAD
The Portable Daylight Lamp perfectly simulates natural sunlight, which makes it perfect for dealing with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), such as low mood, lack of energy and drive. The strong LED light ensures bright and even illumination that gives you a sense of daylight any time of the day or year.
Does Light Therapy Work?
In the winter, outdoor light intensities vary between 2000 and 10000 lux, while indoor intensities can be as low as 500 lux. Spending just one hour a day in front of the Portable Daylight Lamp, with intensity of 10000 lux, can significantly alleviate symptoms of depression, including sleep disorders, insomnia and fatigue. For more information about light therapy and whether it's right for you or your patients, take a look at the NHS guide to light therapy.
What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression caused by lack of sunlight in the winter months. Medical professionals have posited that prevents a part of the brain called the hypothalamus from working properly, which can result in:
- Increased melatonin production: melatonin is a hormone that controls sleep, so increased production leads to feelings of fatigue and lethargy
- Reduced serotonin production: serotonin is a hormone that affects mood, so decreased production has been linked to feelings of depression
- Interrupted body clock (circadian rhythm): as sunlight is used by the body to time certain functions, lack of sunlight can be disruptive to healthy function
What Are the Symptoms of SAD?
SAD is often recognised for a general low mood in the winter months, which is why it is also known as winter depression. However there are more specific symptoms that can help you identify SAD. These include but are not limited to:
- Sadness
- Lack of pleasure or enthusiasm
- Irritability
- Feelings of despair
- Lowered self esteem
- Being quicker to cry
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Lethargy
- Tiredness
- Lack of focus
- Increased appetite leading to weight gain
Convenient Design
LED technology enables the lamp to be very small and compact, ideal for use wherever you feel you need some extra bright lighting. While its surface is smaller than an average tablet, ensuring it fits into any bag or even a larger pocket, it provides light intensity of approximately 10 000 lux to compensate for the effects of a lack of light.
