Why Should I Use a Foam Pressure Mattress?
Foam pressure mattresses, also known as pressure-relieving mattresses or overlays, are designed to provide support and help prevent pressure ulcers or bedsores. Here's how foam pressure mattresses can assist in managing and treating pressure ulcers:
- Pressure Redistribution: Foam pressure mattresses are constructed with specialized foam materials that distribute the body's weight evenly. The foam conforms to the contours of the body, reducing pressure on vulnerable areas, such as bony prominences. This helps to alleviate pressure on specific points and minimizes the risk of developing pressure ulcers.
- Immersion and Envelopment: Foam mattresses have the ability to create an immersion effect, where the body sinks slightly into the foam. This allows for better weight distribution and reduced pressure on specific areas. Envelopment refers to the way the foam molds to the body's shape, providing customized support and minimizing pressure points.
- Pressure Relief: Foam pressure mattresses are designed to relieve pressure on vulnerable areas, particularly those prone to pressure ulcers. The foam material absorbs and distributes pressure, reducing the force exerted on the skin. By reducing pressure, these mattresses help improve blood circulation and decrease the risk of developing pressure ulcers.
- Shear and Friction Reduction: Foam mattresses can also help reduce shear and friction, which are additional contributing factors to pressure ulcers. Shear occurs when the skin moves in one direction while the underlying tissue moves in the opposite direction, causing damage. Foam's ability to conform to the body's shape helps minimize shear forces, and the low-friction surface of foam mattresses reduces friction between the patient's body and the mattress, further reducing the risk of skin breakdown.
- Comfort and Support: Foam pressure mattresses provide a comfortable sleeping surface, promoting better sleep quality and overall well-being for individuals with pressure ulcers. The cushioning effect of the foam helps alleviate discomfort and pain associated with pressure ulcers, facilitating the healing process.
- Versatility and Accessibility: Foam pressure mattresses are available in various thicknesses, densities, and designs, allowing for customization based on individual needs. They can be used as overlays on existing mattresses or as complete mattress replacements, making them accessible and suitable for different healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, and home care.

How Does the Alova XXL Pressure Relief Mattress Alleviate Pressure Sores?
This single-piece mattress is made up 2 materials combined together to create a firm yet relaxing mattress. These include:
- 7cm moulded viscoelastic top layer, with a density of over 75kg/m3, plus hardness of 1.7kPa
- 10cm High Resilient (HR) foam base, with a density of 42kg/m3, plus hardness of 4.5kPa
The Alova XXL Pressure Relief Mattress alleviates pressure sores by redistributing weight of the patient. Through homogenous immersion of the body into the foam, bearing surface area is increased, reducing excess weight in areas that are susceptible to pressure sores.
The Braden Scale predicts the likelihood of pressure ulcer development in patients. The Alova XL Pressure Relief mattress is designed for medium-high risk patients.
