Emergency Evacuation Sledge

The Emergency Evacuation Sledge is a vital piece of equipment designed for the safe and secure removal and evacuation of older and disabled people from offices, care homes, shopping centres and other public places in the event of an accident or incident. The sledge may be operated by a single person or by two people and it allows the patient to be carried or slid down stairs and over other surfaces in the event of an emergency. It has a protective foam layer that protects the head and other key areas during evacuation.

Who Is the Emergency Evacuation Sledge Suitable For?

The Evacuation Sledge is designed for the fast evacuation of buildings for those who cannot evacuate due to a disability or injury. The sledge itself is suitable for anyone concerned about safety in their establishment, including business owners and health and safety inspectors at public buildings. You don't have to be a health professional to use the Evacuation Sledge, meaning that it is a top seller in our disability evacuation range.

What Type of Buildings Can the Evacuation Sledge Evacuate?

The Evacuation Sledge is suitable for many types of buildings and establishments that are multiple stories, as lifts should never be used in an emergency. Types of buildings where the Evacuation Sledge proves useful includes:

  • Businesses
  • Offices
  • Care homes
  • Hospitals
  • Hotels
  • Police stations
  • Public centres
  • Shopping centres
  • Government buildings
  • Council buildings
  • Sports centres
  • Universities
  • Colleges

How Do I Use the Evacuation Stair Slide Sledge?

The Emergency Evacuation Sledge acts as a lifting aid and is incredible easy to use, making it one of the safest and most reliable disability products on the market. To safely evacuate a building, you can follow instructions that are listed on the product. Although a paper copy and online copy of the instructions are not available, the instructions that are written on the product are as follows:

  1. Pull yellow tag to release sledge.
  2. Lay Evacuation Sledge fully extended on the floor, cotton side up.
  3. Lay patient on the Evacuation Sledge.
  4. Ensure patients feet are in the foot pocket.
  5. Tighten security belts over patient.
  6. Pull the patient to safety.

How Many People Does the Evacuation Sledge Need to Be Operated?

The Evacuation Sledge is perfect for businesses and public centres because it requires just one or two people to operate during an evacuation. The user of the sledge can either be pulled using one of the loops, or carried from both ends by two separate people.

Will the Patient Stay Protected During the Evacuation?

If you're dragging the user down the stairs then you may be concerned about their safety. Thankfully the Emergency Evacuation Sledge features two firm foam layers that work to provide comfort and safety. While the inner foam layer creates a cushioning and comforting feel, the second layer protects the user's head and spine from sharp corners and edges from stair panels and hard concrete.

Furthermore, a belt that is locked over the patient's body will prevent movement during the evacuation, and special foot pockets will hold the user in place. These features ensure that the evacuation can be carried out in a fast but calm fashion, without risk to the patient.

What Fail-Safes Keep the Patient Safe?

Dragging a patient in a hectic and panicked evacuation down the stairs may seem a little dangerous, but with the Evacuation Sledge we can assure you that it isn't. The straps that you use to carry the user are unbelievably strong, meaning that you can have peace of mind that the straps won't snap during an evacuation. Lastly, the foot pockets and safety straps are in place to prevent the user from moving, meaning that any involuntary movements during the evacuation aren't likely to disrupt the procedure.

How Much Weight Can the Fire Evacuation Sledge Hold?

The Emergency Evacuation Sledge can hold up to 2.6 tonnes of weight. The strong straps can withhold 2600 kilograms of weight, which is roughly the equivalent of a fully grown giraffe!

What Type of Stairs is the Evacuation Sledge Suitable For?

Due to the Evacuation Sledge's firm foam exterior bottom, it means that you should be able to evacuate patients over carpets, tiles, concrete and other hard types of flooring. A full list of suitable staircase types includes:

  • Concrete
  • Carpet
  • Tiles
  • Spiral staircases

What Can the Patient Do to Keep Safe During Evacuation?

Once the user is securely held in place on the Evacuation Sledge, all they really need to do is remain as still as possible. They can also keep a look out for hazards and other dangers to ensure that the evacuation runs as smoothly and as safely as possible.

How Durable Is the Emergency Evacuation Sledge?

As mentioned above the sledge can hold up to 2.6 tonnes of weight, meaning that it is pretty durable and shouldn't break even after years of use. The tough straps can be pulled hard without coming close to fraying, and the sledge itself can stretch and bend to meet a patient's precise needs.

How Do I Store the Evacuation Sledge?

With your purchase you will receive a safety pouch which you can store on the wall. The sledge can be folded up and stored into the safety pouch and then placed somewhere near where an evacuation may take place.

Is the Evacuation Sledge Flammable?

During an evacuation you may be concerned about the flammability of your disability equipment. It has been tested for FR to CRIB 5, meaning that you can have comfort in knowing that it has passed industry standard fire safety regulation. CRIB 5 means that it passed when subjected to escalating flaming, flame passing through fabric, and fabric flame continuity tests.
