What Is This Pressure Ulcer Staging Model Designed For?
A great educational tool, the Erler-Zimmer Pressure Ulcer Staging Model is designed for medical students to examine and study various pressure wounds in different stages. However, the model also makes an excellent tool for doctors to use whilst explaining causes and prevention of pressure ulcers to patients.
What Are Pressure Ulcers?
Also known as bedsores, pressure ulcers are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue that result from prolonged pressure on the skin. Pressure ulcers are more likely to appear over pressure points on the skin, where bones may rub against material such as socks, shoes, or bed sheets.
What Pressure Ulcer Stages Does This Model Display?
The following pressure ulcers are depicted on the Erler-Zimmer Pat Pressure Ulcer Staging Model:
- Un-stageable eschar/slough wound
- Stage I (in both dark and light skin)
- Stage II
- Stage III with undermining, tunnelling and slough
- Shallow stage IV over the malleolus with exposed bone and tendon, muscle, and undermining, tunnelling, eschar, and slough
Varied Skin Pigmentation
The Erler-Zimmer Pressure Ulcer Staging Model is designed to support the study of pressure ulcers in both light and dark skin tones, especially as injuries can look different in different skin pigmentations. Therefore, the darkly pigmented skin section of this model shows how different a Stage 1, blood blister and suspected DTI (Deep Tissue Injury) may appear depending on the pigmentation.
How Realistic Are the Wounds on This Model?
The life-like quality of the skin on this model, as well as the detail, make it highly beneficial for use in the study of wound care and management. The wounds are made from synthetic materials, and accurately represent real-life wounds for the best possible study.
Can This Model Be Used To Practice Wound Care?
The Erler-Zimmer Pat Pressure Ulcer Staging Model is generally designed for study, however students can also use the model to practice routine cleansing and dressing changes of wounds.
Pressure Injury With Exposed Tendons (Stage IV)
For those looking to study advanced wound therapy management, this Erler-Zimmer had wounds that extend from the surface of the skin to various underlying tissues. The stage IV wounds on this model feature exposed tendons and muscle, undermining, tunnelling, slough, eschar and subcutaneous fat and bone (with osteomyelitis).
