The fabric is firm and rigid to prevent the garment being rolled into a noose and the inclusion of a double neckline means that the garment cannot be torn or split.
How Does a Suicide Smock Prevent Self Harm?
By preventing the user tearing and splitting the garment down, the risk of forming a noose using salvaged fibres is greatly, greatly reduced. The tear-resistant fabric also prevents the wearer gaining access to the soft foam inside the garment, meaning it cannot be stripped down, stored or ingested.

Tear-Resistant Fabric
